Learn How Electromagnetic Pulse Therapy Can Heal Your Body More Efficiently

May 11, 2021

When the body is impacted by anything that causes damage to the tissues, such as injury, infection, stroke, or inflammation, healing takes time.  In the case of acute trauma, such as a bone fracture, healing can take several weeks or months.  Even when the area affected can be used again, often the healing is not complete.  Pain lingers, mobility is limited, or strength in the affected area is weakened.

When damage has been occurring slowly, healing can take even longer.  Often, medical treatments don’t actually promote healing at all; they simply cover up symptoms.  By the time the root cause of a problem is determined, the damage may be so severe that healing can take months or even years.

Electromagnetic pulse therapy (PEMF therapy) can speed the healing process, repairing cellular damage to promote optimal functioning.  It’s not an instant fix, especially if a problem has been building over a significant amount of time, but a large body of evidence shows that PEMFs reduce healing time and promote overall health.

What Conditions Can PEMF Therapy Heal?

PEMF therapy is effective in aiding the healing in a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, chronic illnesses, stroke, fractures, diabetic foot ulcers, and much more. Electromagnetic pulse therapy even heals communication pathways in the brain to treat psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Pain and inflammation are two common conditions treated with electromagnetic pulse therapy.

PEMF treatment is especially useful in managing chronic conditions, such as diabetes, autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and mood disorders. These chronic conditions are often managed with medication, which carry significant risk of adverse side effects.  PEMF therapy is a safe, non-invasive alternative that promotes efficient healing at the cellular level to decrease symptoms and promote real healing.

How Electromagnetic Pulse Therapy Helps the Body Heal More Efficiently

The body is an amazing vessel with incredible self-healing potential.  But sometimes, the healing process is disrupted, leaving tissues vulnerable to chronic disease. Normal cell function includes basic regeneration of cells as they divide, grow, and consume older or unhealthy cells. This process is called autophagy, and does not require any outside intervention to occur. Cell stimulation can, however, make this natural process more efficient.  In the case of injury or disease, PEMF stimulation may be necessary for not only proper, but also faster healing to occur.  The exchange of information between cells for healing purposes requires electrical energy.

All cells in the body have a natural electrical charge.  When the natural balance is skewed, cells may not be able to communicate properly, resulting in damage.  Electromagnetic pulse therapy restores natural charge to the cells, promoting healing at the cellular level.

PEMF therapy helps correct signals sent from the brain to other areas in the body as well.  When these signals are jumbled, symptoms like chronic pain, difficulty sleeping, problems with digestion, and excess fatigue arise.  Restoring the correct frequencies to the brain allows the body to correctly perceive the signals the brain is sending.

The level of disease or injury will play a role in the healing time required.  If damage is caught early, it can be fixed quickly.  But if disease reaches a pathological state, this healing process takes much longer.  Some tissues, like skin, regenerate and repair themselves quickly.  Others take more time and need assistance from healing modalities like PEMFs.  Given enough time and the right support, almost all types of cells can repair, regenerate and heal themselves.

Evidence Supporting the Healing Benefits of PEMFs

A great deal of research has been conducted on the impact and benefits of PEMF therapy.  The FDA has approved PEMF therapy as treatment for healing nonunion fractures, urinary incontinence and muscle stimulation, cervical fusion patients at high risk of non-fusion, depression and anxiety, and even treatment of brain cancer. Research demonstrates that PEMFs can accelerate healing in a wide range of circumstances.

One study showed that PEMFs can aid healing of diabetic foot ulcers by reducing the amount of bacterial infection present.  PEMF therapy alone reduced bacterial count by 99%. When combined with laser therapy, the count reduced by 99.9%.  (Elrashid et al).

Another study examined the impact of PEMF treatments applied to different areas of the body on diabetic foot ulcers that had not been helped by conventional treatments.  PEMFs were applied either to the forearm at an intensity of 8 gauss for two hours per treatment, twice a week or to the chest at an intensity of 6 gauss for 25 minutes twice per week until the ulcers had healed. At the end of 100 days, 88% of the diabetic foot ulcers had healed in the forearm stimulation group, and 94% had healed in the chest stimulation group.  No adverse effects or recurrence of ulcers in the original site were seen during treatment or follow-up, even 3.4 to 7.8 years later. (Cañedo-Dorantes et al).

Brain Recovery

Electromagnetic fields have also been shown to improve brain recovery after stroke. After four weeks of treatment with extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields, growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokine levels involved in neuroplasticity had significantly increased.  The group treated with PEMF also had approximately 35% better cognitive functioning and 45% better depression scores (Cichoń et al).

Another study demonstrated the effectiveness in the management of non-union fractures of early application of PEMFs. At the end of the study, treatment with PEMFs for an average of 4.8 months was successful in 77% of cases, as compared to the success rate of 48% in the sham treatment group. The authors concluded that fracture patients treated with early application of PEMF had significantly increased rate of union and overall reduction in amount of time they suffered as compared to other studies that examined PEMF success after 6 months or more of delayed union (Shi et al).

The Right Choice for Healing and Optimal Health

Electromagnetic pulse therapy can improve healing and promote overall wellness, especially when the proper intensity and length of treatment are employed.  The severity of the issue will determine the amount of time that may be required for healing.

Clinicians who invest in a PEMF device are well equipped to help their clients when conventional treatments have failed.

Investment in a PEMF device for home use allows for extended treatment times at your convenience.  For conditions that are chronic, owning a PEMF device can be much more cost-effective than frequent clinic visits which may not be covered by insurance. Devices can be used by the whole family, for a wide variety of issues, making them an even better investment.
